New Jersey - The region was settled by Dutch and Swedish
colonists in the 1620s and 1630s, was ceded to the English as
part of New Netherland in 1664, and became a royal province in
1702
Origin of the name - Sir John Berkley and Sir George Carteret received a
royal charter for a colony in the new land. The colony was
named after the British island of Jersey, situated in the
English Channel. Carteret had been born on Jersey and had been
Lieutenant Governor of the island.
