Short History of
Louisiana - Claimed by the French explorer René-Robert
Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (1643-1687) for France in 1682. It
was first successfully settled in 1718 with the foundation of
New Orleans. Control of the area passed to the United States
in 1803, and the Territory of Orleans was created in 1804 when
the northern part was split off to form the District of
Louisiana (later the Territories of Louisiana and Missouri
).
Origin of the name - The French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La
Salle (1643-1687) named the area La Louisianne after Louis XIV
of France in 1682.
