Iowa - Part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, Iowa was
organized as a separate territory in 1838. The Mound Builders
lived in the area in prehistoric times.
Origin of the name - Named after the Iowa River which was named after the
Iowa Indians who lived in the territory. The Iowa tribal name
"Ayuxwa" was spelled by the French as "Ayoua" and by the
English as "Ioway."
