  • Facts about the History of Utah History - 1700's

    • The Native Indians of Utah included the Bannock, Gosiute, Navaho, Paiute, Shoshoni and the Ute tribes

    • 1776 - Two Spanish priests, Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante and his superior Francisco Atanasio Domínguez start from Santa Fe to explore Utah

    • 1756 - 1763 - The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba.

    • 1775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies

    • July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence

    • July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces

    • September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain

  • Facts about the History of Utah History - The Early 1800's

    • 1821 - Mexico wins independence from Spain and claims Utah

    • 1822-1829 - William H Ashley exploration and the discovery of a central route to the
      Pacific sends trappers to northern Utah who answered an advertisement in the St. Louis
      Gazette and Public Advertiser in the winter of 1822: "Enterprising Young Men...to ascend
      the Missouri to its source, there to be employed for one, two, or three years." Amongst
      those to respond were Jim Beckwourth, Tom Fitzpatrick, David Jackson, Hugh Glass,
      Jim Bridger and Jedediah Smith

    • 1824 - Jim Bridger ( Old Gabe 1804-1881) discovers the Great Salt Lake

    • 1826 - Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) leads expeditions to California and Nevada

    • 1832 - Antoine Robidoux ( 1794 - 1860 )builds a trading post in the Utah Basin

    • 1841 - Capt. John Bartleson leads first wagon train of settlers, including Nancy Kelsey -
      the first white woman ever to see Utah, across Utah to California

    • 1843 - John C. Fremont (1813-1890) and Kit Carson ( Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson ( 1809 - 1868) explore the Great Basin

    • 1844-45 - Miles Goodyear ( 1817 - 1849) builds Fort Buenaventura

    • 1846 - First party of Mormon settlers arrive in the Salt Lake Valley lead by Brigham Young (1801-1877)

    • 1846 - In just over twenty 70,000 Mormons travelled along the Mormon Pioneer Trail,
      across 5 states in order to escape religious persecution

    • 1848 - U.S. wins Mexican War

    • 1848 - Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo is signed which cedes Utah to the United States

    • 1853 The Walker War with the Ute Indians begins over slavery among the Indians

    • 1865-1868 Ute Black Hawk War last major Indian conflict in Utah

  • Facts about the History of Utah History - The American Civil War

    • 1861 - 1865 The American Civil War. In 1859 John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in
      motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a
      known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The
      initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida,
      Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
      These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The
      bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War.
      The surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9 1865 signalled the end of the Confederacy

    • 1865 December 6 - The Abolishment of Slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S Constitution is ratified, thus officially abolishing slavery

    • 1898-1901 The Spanish American War. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris the US annexes Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines.

  • Origin of the name - Named after the Navajo - the Utes
