Delaware becomes a part of New Netherland 1660 - Dutch establish Bergen 1664 - The British take control of New Jersey from the Dutch 1676 - New Jersey Colony is divided into East Jersey and West Jersey

Origin of the name - Sir John Berkley and Sir George Carteret received a royal charter for a colony in the new land. The colony was named after the British island of Jersey, situated in the English Channel. Carteret had been born on Jersey and had been Lieutenant Governor of the island.
