1609 - Town of Santa Fe established as Spanish-Indian trade centre

1826 - Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) leads expedition to Meadow Valley Wash, Nevada
1828 - Peter Skene Ogden (1794-1854) working for the Hudson's Bay Company led five trapping expeditions to the "Snake Country" between 1828-1829. He discovered Humboldt River
1833-44 Various explorers explore Nevada including Joseph Walker, Captain John C. Frémont and Stevens and Townsend
1843 - The First wagon trains led by Joseph Walker cross the Sierra
1847 - Mormons move to Salt Lake Valley
1848 - United States acquired Nevada in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
1849 - Captain Hunt leads the first wagon train, The Jayhawkers, to California via the Mormon Trail. The high death tole lead to the name of "Death Valley"

1861 - 1865 The American Civil War. In 1859 John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. The surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9 1865 signalled the end of the Confederacy
