Rembrandt Biography Summary: Rembrandt (1606 - 1669) was famous for being one of the world’s greatest painters. Of Dutch origins, his contributions to the art world and surpassed by none. He lived during a period in history known as the Dutch Golden Age. Having married and moved into their own house, the couple began a family but heartache struck from the outset as the first three of their children all died in their first few months of life, only their youngest son, Titus survived into adulthood and tragedy would strike Rembrandt once more when only shortly after giving birth to their last child, his wife died.

Rembrandt Fact File Biography: Lifespan: 1606 - 1669 *** Full Name: Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn *** Occupation: Dutch Painter and Etcher *** Date of Birth: Rembrandt was born on July 15th 1606 *** Place of Birth: Rembrandt was born in Leiden, Dutch Republic, known today as the Netherlands *** Family background: His father was Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn, a miller and his mother was Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck a baker’s daughter. His family was quite well off *** Early life and childhood: He grew up in a time which was religiously fraught and his religion would play a large part in his life and work *** Education: Rembrandt attended a Latin school and would be enrolled at the University of Leiden ***

Rembrandt Fact 1: Rembrandt was born on July 15th 1606 and during the 17th century period in history when Europeans began to colonize the America’s in earnest, the Ming Dynasty began to collapse, in the Near East, the Persian, Ottoman and Mughal empires were on the rise and many innovations were being made in science, medicine, technology and industry.

Rembrandt Fact 2: The era in which he grew was up was a tumultuous time for religion, his father belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church and his mother was a Roman Catholic though Rembrandt himself did not seem to favor a particular religion.

Rembrandt Fact 3: He married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634 and together they had ten children, the first five were christened into the Dutch Reformed Church, the next four in the Old Church and the youngest in the Southern Church.

Rembrandt Fact 4: He showed a great aptitude for painting early on and during his time at university apprenticed for three years under Jacob van Swanenburgh.

Rembrandt Fact 5: He went on to spend a very brief but essential six months in Amsterdam with Peiter Lastman and the next several months with Jacob Pynas before starting his own workshop.

Rembrandt Fact 6: Around 1624 Rembrandt together with a colleague and friend, Jan Lievens, opened a small studio in Leiden and within a couple more years Rembrandt was taking on students.

Rembrandt Fact 7: By 1629 the father of Christiaan Huygens, Constantijn Huygens, would discover Rembrandt and this would lead to significant commissions for him from those associated with the court of The Hague.

Rembrandt Fact 8: In 1631 having decided to move to Amsterdam, Rembrandt, with great success, began to operate as a professional portraitist with immense success.

Rembrandt Fact 9: So much so he and Saskia moved from renting a house to purchasing their own.

Rembrandt Fact 10: Unfortunately, Rembrandt was not the wisest of men when it came to finances and although his income was more than sufficient to have paid for the house outright, a few bad decisions were made in investments that did not succeed.

Rembrandt Fact 11: So much financial trouble did Rembrandt find himself in that having suffered the loss of several of his children in infancy, Saskia also died of tuberculosis not long after the birth of their last child.

Rembrandt Fact 12: Rembrandt was a great collection of art of all sorts and did not leave within his means.

Rembrandt Fact 13: He would be forced to sell his collections and eventually even his printing press and his house.

Rembrandt Fact 14: The Amsterdam painters’ guild were not as forgiving as most of his creditors and he was forbidden to trade as a painter.

Rembrandt Fact 15: With the assistance and cunning of his son Titus and Hendrickje, in order to keep Rembrandt painting they set up a business with Rembrandt as an employee.

Rembrandt Fact 16: He thus continued to paint and sell his work.

Rembrandt Fact 17: His son Titus died in 1668 and within a year of his death Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn died on October 4th, 1669 aged 63 years. He remains were laid to rest in the Westerkerk, the grave unmarked.

Influence & Legacy: Rembrandt's faith was critically important to him and as such he incorporated this intrinsically into his work. Most of his work still exists today and is enjoyed by millions of people every year in various art galleries around the world as well as in private collections.
