Herbert William Garratt Biography Summary: Herbert William Garratt (1864 - 1913) was famous for the Garratt system of articulated locomotives. These locomotives were used across the globe in areas of terrain where they were able to chew up the miles. It is estimated around two hundred and fifty Garratt locomotives are still in existence including the original one built for the North East Dundas Tramway, the K Class. Another single Hanomag-built narrow gauge example can be located in Texas, USA.

For those that were built in Australia several have been restored and are in operational order. It is believed that there are possibly still two Beyer-Garratt locomotives still in operational service in the world.

Herbert William Garratt Fact 1: Herbert William Garratt was born on June 8th 1864 and during the 19th century period in history when scientific discoveries were being made and innovations in mathematics, physics, biology, electricity and chemistry were moving very fast.

Herbert William Garratt Fact 2: He spent his apprenticeship at the Bow Works of the North London Railway during 1879 and 1882.

Herbert William Garratt Fact 3: He also spent some of his time in marine engineering as well as being an inspector for civil engineering contractors.
