Biography Summary: Haile Selassie (1892 - 1975) was the regent of Ethiopia from 1916 to 1930 and Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. Haile Selassie became famous for being hailed as the Ras Tafari, the Jamaican’s believing him to be the messiah. He would also serve as Chairperson of the Organization of African Unity as well as instigating Ethiopia’s entry into the League of Nations and United Nations. Politically he wanted to see his country move forward and promoted collective security and multilateralism but it did not happen quickly enough and it has to be said his rule was not without criticism, largely from the Human Rights Watch.
 

Haile Selassie married Menen Asfar and together they had six children, Princess Tenagnework, Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen, Princess Tsehai, Princess Zenebework and Prince Sahle Selassie.

Haile Selassie Fact 1: Haile Selassie was born on July 23rd 1892. His father was ras Makonnen Woldemikael Gudessa and was the governor of Harar and his mother was Yeshimebet Ali Abba Jifar.

Haile Selassie Fact 2: Haile Selassie was named heir apparent to the throne of Ethiopia in 1917.. Haile Selassie was hailed as the Ras Tafari, and Jamaican’s believed him to be the messiah. Through family lines on both sides of his parents he was able to ascend the imperial throne as a direct descendent of both King Solomon of ancient Israel as well as the Queen of Sheba

Haile Selassie Fact 3: Haile Selassie became a progressive leader and focused on the younger generation and their aspirations.

Haile Selassie Fact 4: During 1923 Ethiopia was became a member of the League of Nations.

Haile Selassie Fact 5: The following year Haile Selassie visited Paris, Rome and London and would become the first ever Ethiopian ruler to ever travel abroad.

Haile Selassie Fact 6: In 1928 he became King (or Negus) of Ethiopia and two years after that was crowned emperor and took the name Haile Selassie meaning “Might of the Trinity”.

Haile Selassie Fact 7: During 1931 he propagated a new constitution which largely limited the powers held by Parliament.

Haile Selassie Fact 8: Although he would lead his country in 1935 in battle when Italy invaded Ethiopia by 1936 he would be forced into exile and he would apply to the League of Nations for assistance.

Haile Selassie Fact 9: As World War II broke out he managed to acquire assistance from Britain as well as Ethiopian exiles in the Sudan to form an army and in January 1941 was able to invade Ethiopia and took Addis Ababa within the next few months.

Haile Selassie Fact 10: He was successful in reinstating himself as supreme leader but had to work hard to regain the strength and power he had held previously.

Haile Selassie Fact 11: By 1955 he was able to grant a new constitution that would give him the same amount of power he had previously held.

Haile Selassie Fact 12: By 1963 he had worked very hard to establish the Organization of African Unity in which he played a major role.

Haile Selassie Fact 13: He would continue to rule over Ethiopia until 1974 by which time, worsening unemployment, political stagnation prompted elements of his army to mutiny and famine had taken a strong grip on his country, he found himself deposed.

Haile Selassie Fact 14: In his own palace he was placed under house arrest and would remain there for the remainder of his life.

Haile Selassie Fact 15: Haile Selassie died on August 27th 1975 in Ejersa Goro, Ethiopian Empire of natural causes. Although it was later proved he had in fact been strangled. His body laid to rest on the palace grounds.

Influence & Legacy: He would be regarded by the Rastafarian movement as the messiah of the African people.
