Biography Summary: Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838 - 1917) was the inventor of the dirigible balloon, a form of rigid airship. He began his career in the military and would spend the better part of thirty years serving his county but during a trip to America during their own civil war he witnessed and experienced his first flight in an air balloon. This thought took hold and Zeppelin was determined to manufacture dirigibles for use in the German Army. Many a success flight would be made in his airships but due to politics his project would be shutdown.

There would however be a resurgence for the zeppelins under Hugo Eckener, his successor and the LZ127 Graf Zeppelin and the LZ130 Graf Zeppelin II would be named after him in his honor.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 1: Ferdinand von Zeppelin was born on July 8th 1838 during the 19th century, at time of new scientific discoveries, new technologies and industrialization.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 2: In 1853 he would polytechnic at Stuttgart and two years later he became a cadet in the military school of Ludwigsburg and would go on enter his career as an army officer in the Württemberg army.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 3: Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1858 Zeppelin was given leave to attend Tubingen to study chemistry, science and engineering.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 4: His studies would be interrupted however when he was called up to the Prussian engineering corps as the Prussians were mobilizing for the Austro-Sardinian War in 1859.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 5: By 1865 Ferdinand von Zeppelin asked for leave to assist the northern troops in Union’s Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War in Virginia.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 6: That same year Zeppelin would be appointed as adjutant to King Charles of Württemberg and then as general staff officer and he participated in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 7: For three years between 1882 and 1885 Ferdinand von Zeppelin served as commander of the 19th Uhlans before being appointed as envy of Württemberg in Berlin. Five years later he returned to the service and was put in command of a Prussian cavalry brigade. He would be forced to resign shortly after this with a rank of Generalleutnant.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 8: He would return to America as an official observer during the American Civil War and it was during this time that he visited John Steiner, a German born ex-army balloonist and experienced his first balloon flight.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 10: Now at fifty two years of age and no longer in the armed forces Zeppelin turned his attention to completely to airships.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 11: His first task was to hire an engineer to perform tests and assess engines and the efficiency of fuel to power to weight ratios. He chose Theodor Gross.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 12: In spite of various setbacks, one of them being the dismissal of Gross. In his place he hired Theodor Kober and was far more successful.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 15: In July of 1900 Ferdinand von Zeppelin would make his first flight with the LZ1 near Friedrichshafen over Lake Constance in southern Germany.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 17: LZ3 would eventually make a successful flight of five hours and fifty five minutes and on board was the Kaiser’s brother, Admiral Prince Heinrich and a couple of weeks later Crown Prince Williams would become a passenger.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 18: LZ3 would be officially accepted by the Government and Zeppelin awarded the Order of the Black Eagle.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 19: The next model after the LZ4 was destroyed would be LZ5 and this too would be accepted into the Army service, but the relationship between the Army and Zeppelin was always remained strained.

Ferdinand von Zeppelin Fact 20: On March 8th 1917 at age 78 years Ferdinand von Zeppelin died in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire.

Influence & Legacy: Although in his lifetime Ferdinand von Zeppelin would never match the success of the airships he built they would in fact carry 37,250 people on more than 1600 flights without mishap. He was although spared the fact that as a result of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles the Zeppelin project would be shutdown.
