Eva Peron Fact 13: In January of 1944 an earthquake decimated San Juan in Argentina, killing around ten thousand people. By that time Eva was the Secretary of Labour and was able to start a fund to raise money to help the victims.
Eva Peron Fact 14: As part of the fundraising a gala was planned at which Eva met Colonel Juan Peron for the first time and it was noted that the couple left the gala together. Shortly thereafter Eva and Peron began a relationship.
Eva Peron Fact 15: It was also announced that year that broadcast performers needed to organize themselves into a union but only one would be allowed and it was that Eva was elected the President of that union.
Eva Peron Fact 16: Peronís popularity was growing and he was becoming feared by certain parties. The sitting President resigned and Peronís friend Edilmiro Julian Farrell became President but Peron would find himself imprisoned because he was becoming increasingly popular and it was feared he wanted the presidency for himself. He was eventually released.
Eva Peron Fact 17: With Eva constantly by his side and never more loyal he fell in love with her and did the unthinkable as someone who had come from her background and lack of education, Juan Peron married Eva Duarte, giving her stability and legitimacy like she had never experience before.
Eva Peron Fact 18: Having been released from prison, Peron actually decided to run legitimately for President. He won by a landslide. Together with Eva they toured the country and Eva would become known as Evita.
Eva Peron Fact 19: During 1947 Eva went on a whistle stop tour of Europe I her husbandís stead feeling that she would receive a better reception than he. On her return she set up her own charity organization when the established one, run by the wealthy wives of the country refused to make her welcome because of her poor background and lack of education. Eva Peron Fact 20: In 1947 a law was passed that allowed women the right to vote and so it was that Eva created her own party, the Female Peronist Party and decided in 1951 that she herself would run for Vice President which would again anger and cause great fear in areas of the government and military. It was automatic that if the sitting president died whoever was vice president automatically became president.
Eva Peron Fact 21: However she would decline to actually run, instead wishing only to have been the wife behind the President.
Eva Peron Fact 22: In January of 1950 she fainted in public and she would eventually be diagnosed with cervical cancer, the extent of which had been kept from her by her husband. Her health continued to deteriorate despite radical treatment.
Eva Peron Fact 23: Her husband would again be elected for a second term as President and she supported him as best she could.
Eva Peron Fact 24: Eva Peron died on July 26th 1952 aged just thirty three years. Because of her popularity with the common people she would be granted a state funeral. Her body was kept on public display while a monument in her honor was built but before completion Peron was overthrown and fled the country unable to make arrangements for his wife body. For sixteen years her whereabouts were unknown until the military finally revealed her remains had been transported to Milan in Italy where she was buried under the name of Maria Maggi. Her body would be exhumed and returned to her husband and his third wife who kept her in their home until finally in 1974 her body was return to Argentina where it was put on display next to her husband who had died also and she would finally be laid to rest in Duarte Family tomb in La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires.

And of course she aroused very different feelings in the people with whom she lived. The oligarchs, as she called the well-to-do and privileged people, hated her. They looked upon her as a ruthless woman. The masses of the people on the other hand worshipped her. They looked upon her as a lady bountiful who was dispensing Manna from heaven.".
