Donato Bramante Facts and Biography


Biography Summary: Donato Bramante (1444 - 1514) was originally trained as painter and although he was quite an accomplished artist his true passion was in architecture. He studied under Scitto Scirri and possibly others. Donato Bramante would travel to Milan and remained there for some 23 years before moving on to Rome where he produced several frescoes. He was commissioned by Cardinal Caraffa to rebuild the Convent della Pace cloister. As a result of this Donato Bramante was introduced to Pope Alexander VI. His successor was Pope Julius II and it was Julius who instructed Bramante to design the rebuilding of St Peter's Basilica. He died before his work was complete.

Donato Bramante Fact 1: Donato Bramante was born during the Renaissance period in history which began in Northern Italy during the 14th century

Donato Bramante Fact 2: The first thirty years of his life are undocumented.

Donato Bramante Fact 3: There are many calculated guesses as to what he was doing during that time but nothing definitive.

Donato Bramante Fact 17: Although none of Donatoís drawings have survived down the centuries there are those of his assistants that have. They give an extraordinary insight into the magnitude of the task.

Donato Bramante Fact 18: His plan and vision was to create a centralized Greek cross with four great chapels in the corners, each with a capped smaller dome feature but after his demise the Greek theme became more Romano-Byzantine.

Donato Bramante Fact 19: One of the last works of Donato Bramante would be the Palazzo Caprini, with its rusticated floor, shops and a second story with Doric half columns, it would later be owned by Raphael and its style copied in northern Italy especially.

Donato Bramante Fact 20: Donato Bramante died on March the 11th, 1514 in Rome and was laid to rest in Old St Peterís.
