Count Alfred von Schlieffen Biography Summary: Count Alfred von Schlieffen (1833 - 1913) was famous for the 1905 to 1906 Schlieffen Plan. He was what became known as a career serviceman. During his early years in service to his country he was assigned to the Topographic Bureau which would equip him with critical knowledge about terrain and weather conditions to be taken into account when making strategic and tactical decisions.
 

His most commonly used maneuver was the Battle of Encirclement for which he became well known as it consistently favored the counter-offensive taking into account both Clausewitz’s assessment of the ever decreasing strength of the offensive together with an understanding of the terrain that was being fought on.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 1: Count Alfred von Schlieffen was born on February 28th 1833 and during the 19th century period in history when many empires across the globe collapsed, the Spanish, first and second French, Holy Roman, Mughal and Chinese but the British and Russian Empires, the United States and German Empire where on the rise.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 2: At the University of Berlin he studied law and although he had previously not shown any interest in attending any of the military cadet academies he did however decide to enlist in the army for the compulsory one years’ service in 1853.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 3: After his one year was complete he was however chosen as an officer candidate instead of joining the reserves and thus began his extensive career in the military.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 4: All told he would serve his country for fifty three years and successfully worked his way up through the ranks.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 5: He married Countess Anna Schlieffen in 1868 who was also his cousin. Together they had two daughters, Grafin and Marie and it was after Maria’s birth that his wife Anna died.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 10: He did not active war until the Battle of Koniggratz in 1866 with the Prussian Cavalry Corps during the Austro-Prussian War.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 11: Next he took part in the Franco-Prussian War in command of a small army located in the Loire Valley.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 12: The Grand Duke of Baden, Frederick I in France saw fit to promote him to Major and in 1886 having spent many years beside both Alfred von Waldersee and Helmuth von Moltke he was given a further promotion to Major General.

Count Alfred von Schlieffen Fact 13: After Moltke retired he also became Waldersee’s Deputy Chief of Staff.
