Colin Powell Biography Summary: Colin Powell (1937 - Present) is famous for his outstanding contributions to his country. While attending High School Colin Powell joined the Reserves and found where he was comfortable in life and so pursued a career in the military. He married Alma Johnson in August of 1962 and together they had three children, a son, Michael and two daughters, Linda and Annemarie.
 

He steadily rose the ranks and even entered into the White House and served at the pleasure of the President in his military capacity. Although he briefly toyed with the idea of taking a more active role in politics he decided it was not where his passions lay. He retired from the military in 1993.

Colin Powell Fact 1: Colin Powell was born on April 5th 1937 in New York City, New York and would become American Statesman, Retired Four-Star General in the United States Army, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, Commander of the U.S. Armed Forces Command and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Colin Powell Fact 2: Family: He came from a family that was working class. The names of his parents were Luther Theophilus Powell and Maud Arial McKoy both of Jamaican ancestry.

Colin Powell Fact 3: Education: He was educated at Morris High School and City College of New York.

Colin Powell Fact 4: Career: He began his career when he joined the Reserves Officers’ Training Corps.

Colin Powell Fact 5: He was not an outstanding student in school although he would go on to earn his BS degree in geology at the City College of New York and his MBA degree in George Washington University.

Colin Powell Fact 6: While still attending school he worked part time in a baby furniture store which bought him into contact with other members of his community, which consisted of white, African American and Puerto Rican people. He also came into contact with eastern European Jewish shopkeepers and their customers where he learned some Yiddish and would also help the Orthodox families on their Sabbath with tasks they were forbidden to do.

Colin Powell Fact 7: Having joined the ROTC and found he not only liked it but he was good at it. In 1958 he joined the military. He became a member of the Pershing Rifles and when he graduated he would receive his commission as an Army second lieutenant. When he completed his basic training he would be assigned to West Germany and the 48th Infantry as a platoon leader.

Colin Powell Fact 8: He served two tours, separately, in Vietnam and it was an experience that would leave a haunting nightmare.

Colin Powell Fact 9: Under President Richard Nixon he served a White House Fellowship in 1972, a highly prestigious position.

Colin Powell Fact 10: During the 1983 invasion of Greneda, Powell served as senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and in 1986 during the airstrike on Libya.

Colin Powell Fact 11: In 1987, aged forty nine, Powell became National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan.

Colin Powell Fact 12: Under President George H.W. Bush he became Commander-in-Chief, Forces Command for a brief time.

Colin Powell Fact 13: Between 1989 and 1993 he served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in the Department of Defense there is no higher position. In this position he would oversee twenty eight crises amongst which were the invasion of Panama, Operation Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War.

Colin Powell Fact 14: There were discussions about giving him a fifth star which would have made him the General of Army which was backed not only by Congress but the public as well, but it was ultimately decided against by the Clinton-Gore presidential transition team.

Colin Powell Fact 15: Although he brief toyed with the idea of running for office, he had no real passion for politics.

Colin Powell Fact 16: He officially retired from the military in 1993 ranked as a four-star general. By 2005 he was also retired from political life and became a “strategic limited partner” for Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield and Byers a Silicon Valley venture capital firm of some repute.

Colin Powell Fact 17: Later in 2005 he was very critical of the response to Hurricane Katrina saying many thousands were not protected properly not because they were black, but simply because they were poor.
