Biography Summary: Carl Jung (1875 - 1961) was a leader in the field of analytical psychology and dream analysis. His study of the mind would be influential in the fields of philosophy as well as psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, religious studies and literature. The dream theory of Carl Jung is one of the most important and influential dream theories in modern depth psychology. Carl Jung wrote prolifically, although much of his findings would not be published until long after he had died.
 

A few of his most well-known concepts in psychology included archetype, the complex, collective unconscious and introversion and extraversion. Carl Jung was the founder of analytical psychology. He was complex man who, at times, found himself experiencing the very issues he was studying.

Carl Jung Fact File Biography: Lifespan: 1875 - 1961 *** Full Name: Carl Gustav Jung *** Occupation: Swiss Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist *** Date of Birth: Carl Jung was born on July 26th 1875 *** Place of Birth: Carl Jung was born in Kesswil, Thurgau, Switzerland *** Family background: His father was Paul Achilles Jung and his mother was Emilie Preiswerk. Paul Jung was a rural pastor of simple means but his motherís family was very wealthy *** Early life and childhood: Carl Jung grew up in an unstable home. His mother possibly suffered mental health issues, often claiming to have seen spirits in the night and would spent time in hospital. His father took to stay with his motherís sister and would later be taken back to his father *** Education: Carl Jung attended the Humanistisches Gymnasium in Basel ***

Carl Jung Fact 1: Carl Jung was born on July 26th 1875 and during the 19th century period in history when significant developments were made in biology, science, physics, medicine and technology.

Carl Jung Fact 2: An incident in school led to Carl Jung being pushed to the ground by another student resulting in him losing consciousness. This would later develop into his experiencing fainting spells when he started homework or when he was walking to school.

Carl Jung Fact 3: When he overheard his father speaking to someone about his ability to look after himself as a result of this affliction, he decided to fight against the feeling when it arose and found he could conquer it. He also began to study far harder than he had been in a bid to secure himself a good job.

Carl Jung Fact 4: His studying of psychiatry came about purely by accident. Carl Jung began to read a book on the subject and it immediately caught his attention and sparked his interest.

Carl Jung Fact 5: Carl Jung would go on to study medicine at the University of Basel.

Carl Jung Fact 6: By 1900 Carl Jung was working with Eugen Bleuler in Zurich at the Burgholzli psychiatric hospital and through Bleuler, Jung developed a strong friendship with Sigmund Freud the neurologist from Austria.

Carl Jung Fact 7: Over the next six years the two corresponded most often collaborating in their work until Jung published Psychology of the Unconscious in 1912 which saw the two have different opinions that they could not agree on or admit that either could be wrong. The relationship did not survive the rift.

Carl Jung Fact 8: When World War I broke out Carl Jung would be drafted as an army doctor and found himself working in an internment camp, anyone crossing the lines into neutral Switzerland was held captive, and in an effort to make their confinement less disagreeable he encouraged them to take up university courses.

Carl Jung Fact 9: Carl Jung married in 1903 and with his wife, Emma Rauschenback, they had five children together, Agathe, Gret, Franz, Marianne and Helene.

Carl Jung Fact 10: In 1913 and again in 1914 Carl Jung attended the Psycho-Medical Society in London but the Great War soon curtailed his movements across Europe.

Carl Jung Fact 11: At thirty eight years of age, Carl Jung began experiencing visions and hearing voices. He was concerned with his own mental health and began making notes of what he experienced in small journals before transcribing them into a larger leather bound red book.

Carl Jung Fact 12: Carl Jung would continue to write and publish his material over the years.

Carl Jung Fact 13: On June 6th 1961 Carl Jung died after a brief illness at Kusnacht in Zurich, Switzerland aged eighty five. His body was laid to rest at the family grave in the Protestant Church Graveyard, Kusnacht in Switzerland.

Influence & Legacy: The legacy of Carl Jung is one that has carried many forward in the investigations of the mind and mental health. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which is a psychometric instrument, together with concepts of socionics, were created from his theory of psychological types. Carl Jung would also become one of the contributors of symbolization and dream analysis.
