Biography Summary: Aretha Franklin (1942 - present) was famous for her song “Respect”. Aretha Franklin has enjoyed both the ups and downs of a musical career. In her early years while managed by her father her success grew. She eventually changed record labels and although initially her career was stable, however she did start to experience some issues and decided on a change in her record label which saw an increase in her popularity once more.
 

Aretha Franklin married, twice, although she has never had children of her own, she has had stepchildren. She continues to give live performances and has received numerous awards over her career.

Her father was an itinerant preacher and her mother an accomplished vocalist and piano player *** Early life and childhood: She grew up with her sisters Erma, Cecil and Carolyn and a half-brother called Vaughn from her mother’s previous relationship, who Clarence adopted after they married, and another half-sister by her father, Carl Ella *** Education: Aretha Franklin had a regular academic education ***

Aretha Franklin Fact 1: Aretha Franklin was born on March 25th 1942 and during the 20th century period in history when such things as cultural homogenization through development in transportation and communications technology as well as world population growth are all major issues in this century.

Aretha Franklin Fact 2: From quite young, as a result of her father’s preaching, Aretha Franklin was around famous musical artists and people. The likes of Clara Ward, James Cleveland and Albertina Walker visited her home to see her father.

Aretha Franklin Fact 5: Shortly after her mother died in March of 1952, Aretha first sand the hymn “Jesus, Be a Fence Around Me” at New Bethel. Just four years later she was being managed by her father taking her on the road with him where he toured the so-called “gospel caravan” tours where she would perform in churches.

Aretha Franklin Fact 6: In 1956, with her father’s help, she signed her first record deal with J.V.B. Records and released her first gospel album called Songs of Faith.

Aretha Franklin Fact 7: By the time she was eighteen she wanted to follow Sam Cooke’s path and record pop music. Her father agreed and helped bring her to the attention of Columbia Records.

Aretha Franklin Fact 8: Berry Gordy showed an interest in Aretha and her sister Erma but her father felt Gordy’s label was not established enough and so she was signed with Columbia who had work with a choreographer who helped her prepare for a career in the pop industry.
