Biography Summary: Anton Haus (1851 - 1917) was famous for being fleet commander during the first World War for the Austro-Hungarian Navy as well as the Navy’s Grand Admiral. Not only was he promoted to the highest possible rank within the Austro-Hungarian navy, Grand Admiral, but Emperor Karl I awarded him the posthumous honour of Commander of the Military Order of Maria Theresa.
 

It would greatly be as a result of his strategic defense that saw the allied navy be as successful as it was especially after Italy went over to the Germans.

Anton Haus Fact 1: Anton Haus was born on June 13th 1851 and during the 19th century period in history when slavery would largely become abolished during this century with salve revolts in Britain, Haiti and France. In particular in America the Civil War of 1861 to 1864 saw the abolition of slavery and in England the Slavery Abolition Act saw the British Royal Navy put an end to the global slave trade.

Anton Haus Fact 2: In 1869 Anton joined the Navy and would distinguish himself when he became in instructor at the Imperial and Royal Naval Academy in Fiume. He was a teaching in both the Naval Academy as well as the Naval Torpedo School.

Anton Haus Fact 4: Having returned to a sea command he was given command of a corvette and sent to China in 1900/01 to intervene, along with other nations, in the Boxer Rebellion.

Anton Haus Fact 6: By 1907 he would receive a promotion to Vizeadmiral and would be the Austro-Hungarian envoy for the second Hague Peace Conference that took place between May and October during that year.

Anton Haus Fact 10: When war broke out, Haus was appointed Fleet Commander and when Italy joined the war he instructed a battle fleet to bombard Ancona as well as other Italian Adriatic ports overnight on the May 23rd and 24th of 1915.

Anton Haus Fact 12: As a navel strategist, he was one of the best and much like his German counterpart, Alfred con Tirpitz, he was in favor of unrestricted submarine warfare and would garner much criticism from the Germans for his strategizing that his strength lay in maintaining a fleet in being to stand against any threat to the Allied powers.

Anton Haus Fact 13: By 1916 Haus would become the only remaining Austro-Hungarian naval officer on active duty to receive a promotion to Grand Admiral. Maximilian Njegovan his successor would also receive such an honor but he was on the retired list.

Anton Haus Fact 14: Anton Haus died on February 2nd 1917 in Pola of pneumonia aged sixty five years. His body was laid to rest at the naval military cemetery but later when Pula came under Italian sovereignty his remains would be transferred to Vienna.

Influence & Legacy: He would be the only naval officer in active service to his country that would be appointed as a Grand Admiral.
