Louisa May Alcott, who is often referred to as one of the great writers of children's literature, was famous
for her homely books about life in America in the 19th Century. Her most celebrated novels featured the
March family starting with Little Women which was published in 1868 and followed by Little Men, Good Wives and Jo's Boys.
Little Women has proved so popular that it has been made into two
film versions, the first starring June Allyson and Elizabeth
Taylor and the most recent movie starred Susan Sarandon and Wynona
Ryder. Louisa May Alcott wished to be a writer at an early age,
but due to financial circumstances had to take full time menial
jobs to help support her family. Her first real success as a
writer did not occur until at the age of 29 she wrote "Hospital
Sketches", a volume which was based on letters she had written for
injured solders during the Civil War while she was acting as a
nurse.
