Born in Port Conway, King George, Virginia
he was well educated at Princeton University. In the 1770s and 1780s he was active in state
politics. His friendship with Jefferson led to his appointment as secretary of state in
1801.
In 1809, Madison succeeded Jefferson as president, defeating Charles C. Pinckney.
Madison was
re-elected in 1812. He
lead the US against the British during War of 1812, (1812-1814). In 1814, the British actually captured Washington and forced Madison to flee to Virginia.
He ended his term of Presidency in
1817 and retired
to his home in Virginia.
